My .net magazine “Build a Retro game in Flixel” article is now out

.net magazine is apparently the “world’s best-selling magazine for web designers” which may be of little interest to game developers reading this, however issue 217 just hit the news stands and it contains Part 1 of my article on building an 8-bit inspired retro platformer in flixel :)

The article starts from ground zero and builds up, covering sprite sheets, tile maps, cameras and collision. Written for almost total beginners, with lots of well commented source code (available as a download) to accompany,  it should serve as a gentle introduction to flash game dev. I will post the article on my blog eventually, but not for a couple of months. So if you’d like to see it earlier take a wander into your local newsagents, or you should be able to buy the issue online from the .net site. Part 2 will appear in issue 218 (September 2011)

That magazine is not sold where I live, and I desperately need a series of tutorials for zero-knowledge Flixel & AS3 developers. Where can I look at? Remember: I have zero experience. =)

The article will appear on my blog once it has run its course in the magazine. So approx. 60 days time. Sounds ages to wait I know, but not much I can do about that I’m afraid.

Thanks Rick – and yeah I noticed that today, so I’ve updated the links to point there. You can get single issues in print, or digital.

I d/led the digital version….awesome article Rich, but damn, what drugs were the programmers of the Zinio Reader on? Extremely cumbersome….I did screenshots and made my own PDF lol

Ouch, sorry about that! (have never tried the digital version of their magazine to be honest). I’ll release it as a PDF once I’m allowed to :) (won’t be for a while yet though)

If anyone else is contemplating buying the download, don’t let my opinion of the reader stop you. It’s a good issue, and I learned one thing from the article that was worth the purchase price. Just wanted to add that :-)

Grats man! I wish they would have featured some of your art on the cover rather than that boring black W we all have seen a million times before… :o)

Looks great. Having trouble getting the magazine as well, but I’ll be scanning the blog for when the article goes up. I tried to get into Flixel a year ago and am looking forward to something that can get me back in to it.

Just bought the magazine. I had to go to the all of the bookstores in town just to find it.

Sorry about that – but not really my fault :) The new issue with part 2 in is finally out too!
